Highway 1, Big Sur and Carmel

Emily, Kate and I decided to drive Highway 1 from LA to Carmel. We'd never done this, but always heard it was a beautiful drive so we left Saturday morning.

Our first stop along the way was this place where you can view elephant seals while they're sunbathing. They make the strangest noises and they're oddly human-like.

Here's one of the elephant seals. They're a lot bigger than the regular seals. In the foreground, you'll see a stupid chipmunk that wouldn't get out of the way.

Our second stop was Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in Big Sur. We took a short little hike to see McWay Falls. It's this awesome waterfall that falls right onto the beach.

We reached Carmel in the evening. We walked around for a bit, but it was so cold! We stayed in a B&B that was about a block from the ocean. It was a cute little place.

The view from outside our room's door.

Emily and I went running on Sunday morning. We went out before the sun was up and it was beautiful to see the sun slowly rise and light up the landscape. I made sure to bring my camera and made Emily stop several times so I could take a picture.

We walked around Carmel again later that day, made a few purchases and headed down to the beautiful beach. It was a sunny day and there were tons of people and even more dogs! It made us wish we had ours with us.

On the drive back to LA, we stopped at Hearst Castle. The pool was my favorite. I can appreciate all the priceless art and architecture the place contains, but meshed together as it is, I didn't find it very appealing. The setting, of course, was the best part. The ocean could be seen for miles in both directions.

California is such a beautiful place, especially the coast and more especially the coast around Carmel and Monterey. Those are beautiful pictures you posted and it warms are hearts that you three daughters are experiencing it together...a nice memory. I'm jealous you visited the Hearst Castle...something I'd like to do. Those seals were cool but they look like a bunch of slugs sunning on the beach. The little chipmunk was a riot. Glad you had such a good time. Here in SL we had three inches of wet, heavy snow. It's nice to day though, will get up to 60 degrees! Oh, did you guys feel the earthquake? It was suppose to have been felt in Santa Monica which is so close to you.

What gorgeous pictures! Wow! The three of you look happy and relaxed! Your hair is all the same color (ok, Emiloo's is a tad different...hmmmm..) and shimmers like spun gold in the sunlight!
