Today I wore a long sleeve shirt to work and then drove home with my sunroof open. I love the fall. Just when the heat was becoming unbearable and I'd grown tired of boating and laying out (usually burning rather than tanning), fall came along and granted me a reprieve. Autumn is the best time of the year. I love the fall.
I love the chill mornings with the promise of a crisp, warm and sunny day. I love the treats associated with fall, e.g., candy corn, caramel apples and pumpkin pie. I love all the Halloween paraphernalia that seems to linger throughout the entire season. I love Halloween night and watching all the old scary movies that are on TV. I love the way Mount Olympus turns the color of fire. I love the way the streets and sidewalks get littered with fallen leaves. I love the way it drizzles, always hinting at the coming winter. I love sleeping with the window open.
One of my favorite poems about autumn is a Halloween (my favorite holiday and therefore, just another reason for me to love the fall) poem by Carl Sandburg called "Theme in Yellow."
I spot the hills
With yellow balls in autumn.
I light the prairie cornfields
Orange and tawny gold clusters
And I am called pumpkins.
On the last of October
When dusk is fallen
Children join hands
And circle round me
Singing ghost songs
And love to the harvest moon;
I am a jack-o'-lantern
With terrible teeth
And the children know
I am fooling.

To commemorate the end of summer, I went hiking up Milcreek Canyon on Labor Day with Jacob, two of his friends, Kate and Jamie Hawkins. We went around noon and, unlike today, it was hot! A little more than halfway up I notice that Kate is lagging behind. I stop and when she comes into view I can tell she is suffering. To her credit (as well as mine) it is a hard hike. So I call to Jacob to tell him we are going down and that we will just wait for them at the bottom. He comes down to where we are to talk to me and convince us to keep going. At this time I double over and throw up into the bushes. I can tell Jacob doesn't know what to do. I just hear him in the background saying "Oh my gosh. Megan, are you okay?" Later he said he didn't know if he should have been rubbing my back or something else to help me. He's priceless! Anyway, Kate and I start heading down and she says that she was almost to that point. We didn't have to wait too long for them to come back down and then Kate, Jacob and I went to Cafe Rio. Mmmmmmm!
