Reminiscing . . .

This past Saturday my cousin Dallas was married. He's my age so whenever my family went up to Boise to visit Grandma Zurcher, Dallas was my friend for the week. I remember having so much fun with him. In the summer of '97, my family and I moved from Northern California to Holladay, Utah. That same summer my grandma Zurcher moved from Boise to Draper, Utah and Dallas' family moved from Boise to Alpine, Utah.

Ever since my grandma died, we haven't seen as much of that side of the family. It was great to see everyone this weekend and I was so happy for Dallas. Now his sister, Molly, is getting married in November so I will get to see them all again real soon. I wanted to post some pictures of Dallas and me when we were little kids so here are a couple of pictures of the times when we were in Boise. I love looking at old pictures and laughing at the outfits I use to wear, not to mention the hair!

Here's Dallas and myself being held by my dad.
Check out Emily's dress in this one! And why was Dallas riding around on hot wheels that were clearly meant for a girl?

This is Dallas and me playing in a field of flowers in my grandma's backyard. She lived on a sort of hill that overlooked farmland.

Kate in Concert

Back in August, Kate competed in the State Fair musical competition and won first place in the Junior Harp division. Along with the other first place winners in all the categories (Strings, Flute, Piano, Voice, and Winds/Brass/Percussion), Kate performed at the Assembly Hall this past Saturday. She gave her best performance yet of Impromptu-Caprice by Pierne, a song she had played countless times. We were all so proud of her. Way to go Kate!

I love the fall

Today I wore a long sleeve shirt to work and then drove home with my sunroof open. I love the fall. Just when the heat was becoming unbearable and I'd grown tired of boating and laying out (usually burning rather than tanning), fall came along and granted me a reprieve. Autumn is the best time of the year. I love the fall.

I love the chill mornings with the promise of a crisp, warm and sunny day. I love the treats associated with fall, e.g., candy corn, caramel apples and pumpkin pie. I love all the Halloween paraphernalia that seems to linger throughout the entire season. I love Halloween night and watching all the old scary movies that are on TV. I love the way Mount Olympus turns the color of fire. I love the way the streets and sidewalks get littered with fallen leaves. I love the way it drizzles, always hinting at the coming winter. I love sleeping with the window open.

One of my favorite poems about autumn is a Halloween (my favorite holiday and therefore, just another reason for me to love the fall) poem by Carl Sandburg called "Theme in Yellow."

I spot the hills
With yellow balls in autumn.
I light the prairie cornfields
Orange and tawny gold clusters
And I am called pumpkins.
On the last of October
When dusk is fallen
Children join hands
And circle round me
Singing ghost songs
And love to the harvest moon;
I am a jack-o'-lantern
With terrible teeth
And the children know
I am fooling.

To commemorate the end of summer, I went hiking up Milcreek Canyon on Labor Day with Jacob, two of his friends, Kate and Jamie Hawkins. We went around noon and, unlike today, it was hot! A little more than halfway up I notice that Kate is lagging behind. I stop and when she comes into view I can tell she is suffering. To her credit (as well as mine) it is a hard hike. So I call to Jacob to tell him we are going down and that we will just wait for them at the bottom. He comes down to where we are to talk to me and convince us to keep going. At this time I double over and throw up into the bushes. I can tell Jacob doesn't know what to do. I just hear him in the background saying "Oh my gosh. Megan, are you okay?" Later he said he didn't know if he should have been rubbing my back or something else to help me. He's priceless! Anyway, Kate and I start heading down and she says that she was almost to that point. We didn't have to wait too long for them to come back down and then Kate, Jacob and I went to Cafe Rio. Mmmmmmm!
